1. Chlamydia

It is a common bacterial infection. It disproportionately affects the female reproductive system of women aged 15-24 years. It can trigger pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) where the reproductive organs get inflamed due to the presence of unwanted bacteria. If you are diagnosed with Chlamydia, you have approximately 10-15% chances of having PID. A usual symptom of PID is scarring of pelvic organs which prevent the sperm to merge with the egg. Ectopic or tubal pregnancy is a result of PID and needs immediate treatment through medications or surgery.

Chlamydia can also affect your newborn baby. If left treated, mothers can forward the bacterial infection onto their fetus, leading to inclusion conjunctions, known as pink eye. 50 percent of babies from mothers with Chlamydia have this eye disease. Chlamydia, if untreated, can be dangerous for newborns, too. Mothers would pass the virus into their fetus causing inclusion conjunctivitis, which is known as pink eye. Around 50 percent of babies of mothers having Chlamydia catch this eye disease. Luckily, Chlamydia can be effectively treated by a course of antibiotics.

Get a Chlamydia diagnosis test done before it creates havoc in your pregnancy phase.

2. Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is another bacterial infection which also leads to PID. It influences male fertility as it harms the male reproductive system and promotes epididymitis. If epididymitis is not treated in time, results in infertility.

In context of gonorrhea, the bacteria infection leading to pink eye disease in newborns is called conococcal conjunctivitis. If this is left uncured, it can lead to blindness.

Gonorrhea can be managed through antibiotics. However, sometimes gonorrhea becomes resistant to existing treatments, making its treatment a difficult job.

3. Human Papillomavirus

Also called HPV is a common disease. If you’re sexually active, it is a possibility that you may have HPV once in your lifetime. At present, HPV is untreatable medically. HPV usually doesn’t affect your conceiving chances.

Your gynecologist will diagnose you for HPV and determine whether you need to undergo any treatment.

4. Syphilis

When detected in the initial stage, syphilis is now treatable by penicillin. If you are pregnant and having syphilis, there are 50 percent chances of miscarriage or stillbirth. If your baby is diagnosed with syphilis, 10 percent chances that it may die on the time of birth or a few days after.

Syphilis may also result in epididymitis in males, and ultimately infertility. It has a negative impact on the testicles and if it is left untreated for prolonged periods can cause erectile dysfunction.

5. Genital Herpes

Presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) triggers genital herpes. Females are more prone to catch this infection and it is currently untreatable. 1 in every 4 females has genital herpes compared to 1 in every 8 males. Mothers with genital herpes pass on this virus to their newborn. The good news is that you can prevent the forwarding of virus into your baby through medications and c-section birthing.

6. HIV

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) messes with your immune system, making it weak to fight with diseases.

Note that HIV doesn’t impact your pregnancy chances but can be passed onto your newborn baby with lifetime incurable diseases. However, if you get yourself tested for HIV prior to pregnancy, it can be treated through medications ensuring that your baby doesn’t have HIV. You can also opt for c-section to protect your baby.
