What are the best fertility treatments available to treat PID?
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a condition which affects a female’s reproductive organs – uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. If you have Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) and it goes untreated for a prolonged period of time, it may result in blocked fallopian tubes or pelvic adhesions ultimately leading to infertility.
What are the possible indications that I have PID?
If you are experiencing pelvic discomforts then you should look out for the following symptoms:
- Mild or severe pain in pelvic area or belly
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Sudden vaginal bleeding either after sexual intercourse or spotting during menstruation
- Vaginal discharge in yellow or green color with a foul smell
Also, if you have a history of ectopic pregnancy then there are chances of you having PID.
Will I face any complications if I have PID?
If you have PID that has reached its advanced stage, you may encounter the following conditions:
- Development of cysts filled with pus in ovaries and fallopian tubes
- Inflammated tissues surrounding the abdomen
- High fever
- Frequent nausea and vomiting
If you are having any of the above mentioned symptoms, visit a doctor for immediate treatment.
If I have PID, will it impact my fertility potential to conceive in future?
If you have mild PID and is treated in time then you have a good potential to have a successful conception and become pregnant. However, if you have severe PID and remains untreated, you may have blocked fallopian tubes.
If you have severe PID or your PID goes untreated, there are higher chances of having fallopian tubes.
Why does PID happen?
PID is likely due to the presence of sexually transmitted infection like Chlamydia, gonorrhea and other STIs that spread across your uterus opening and affects the ovaries and fallopian tubes as well. In case of Chlamydia, there are 1%-3% chances of developing PID.
In addition, there are various other factors that may trigger your PID as follows:
- Unprotected sexual intercourse
- Chlamydia is common for people under 25 years of age
- Sexually active at a young age
- Introduction to a new sexual partner
- More than one sexual partner
- Either of the partners have a history of STIs
How will I know that I have PID?
If you think you are facing issues similar to those of PID then you should consult a doctor immediately who may refer you to a genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic to get a couple of tests done. The tests may include vaginal swab test where a few swabs from your vagina will be retrieved to determine if any sexually transmitted infection is present. In addition, some blood tests will be a part of your examination.
How can I treat PID and increase my chance to conceive?
Luckily, PID can be treated by following a simple course of antibiotics. Make sure that you get PID treated in time to prevent any damage to your uterus, fallopian tubes for long-term good health. Furthermore, the treatment will be more effective if both you and your partner take antibiotics to avoid repeated infection. The entire antibiotic course may last for upto 2 weeks along with adequate bed rest. You should also stay away from sexual contact in any way to prevent re-infection.
After the completion of the antibiotic course, visit the doctor to confirm whether the treatment is working or not. This will be followed by a checkup after a few weeks to check whether the infection has been cured.
I had PID and underwent a tubal surgery. I am planning to conceive. What are the available fertility treatments for me?
Firstly, you need to get a vaginal examination done to see whether there has been any damage to your fallopian tubes. If yes, then you may have to undergo Laparoscopy under the influence of local anesthesia. Through Laparoscopy, your doctor will be able to have a clear view of your reproductive organs and determine whether there is any scarring of tissues, blockages or adhesions in your fallopian tubes.
If any problem is detected, there are two fertility treatment options available for you.
- In-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment
- Tubal surgery
IVF is a renowned fertility treatment and is effective for curing tubal diseases but if you opt for a tubal surgery, there is only 1 out 4 chances of conceiving in 1 year. If you have mild PID, you may get pregnancy earlier.
However, if you wish to do an IVF treatment in India, you can visit our centre – International Fertility Centre located in New Delhi.
