Step- by- step procedure involved in IVF treatment is as follows:
Stimulation of Ovaries: Medicinal drugs for two weeks are prescribed by our gynecologist to stop the natural menstrual cycle and to stimulate egg production. We try to increase the egg production during ovulation period so that multiple number of eggs are available for fertilization and increase the probability of successful embryo formation. Transvaginal ultrasound is performed to investigate the ovaries and blood test samples are taken to confirm hormone levels, ovarian reserve, antral follicle count, etc.
Egg retrieval: For the egg collection or retrieval during ovulation period of a woman, a minor surgical procedure is carried out with the help of ultrasound imaging and a needle is inserted through the vagina and into each ovary. The eggs are then collected through the injected needle. In some cases, medication such as, anesthesia is provided to reduce and remove potential discomfort or pain.
Fertilization and formation of Embryo: The partner’s sperm sample is collected either by natural way or with the help of PESA/TESA. After sperm washing and complete sperm analysis, sperm is placed in a Petri dish where it is combined with the retrieved egg. If the partner’s sperm is of weak quality or has a low sperm count, donor’s sperm can be utilized after sperm and is stored in a laboratory to encourage fertilization. In some cases if the partner has low sperm count, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) technique could also be used to increase the probability of successful fertilization. The fertilized eggs (embryos) continue to grow in the laboratory for one to five days and good quality embryos after careful inspection are being transferred into the woman’s uterus.
Embryo Transfer: The best quality embryos are selected for transfer into the uterus. The transfer is done with the help of a very thin catheter which is inserted into the vagina and passes through the cervix into the uterus to transfer the embryos. This procedure usually does not require anesthesia and is a painless procedure. Though some women may experience mild cramping, however, the patient can leave the clinic in a while and go through a normal routine. If the procedure is successful, pregnancy is confirmed after two weeks of embryo transfer.
