Why use Acupuncture to treat PCOS naturally?

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a process which involves stimulation of points by penetrating needles at specific points of the body manually or electrical means.

It is a well-known traditional Chinese method that is believed to cure any pain or illness due to blockage in the flow of vital energy or “qi”. Acupuncturists insert thin needles at specific acupuncture points to unblock this flow of “qi” and restore body’s balance.

What is PCOS?

PCOS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, is a condition where a woman’s sex hormones – estrogen and progesterone – are out of balance. This results in development of ovarian cysts which in turn affects the menstrual cycle and a woman’s fertility.

What type of Acupuncture is best for PCOS?

The most effective type of acupuncture for PCOS is electro-acupuncture. This is a type of acupuncture where a small electric current is transferred through the needle into the muscle. A circuit is set up with the help of two needles. The current is a continuous pulsating current and the process lasts for not more than 30 minutes.

The needle is inserted through the skin in the underlying muscle. The electric stimulation by the needle causes the muscles to send sensory information about the ovary to the brain. This causes a decrease in the release of male hormones (androgens responsible for PCOS symptoms) from the ovaries.

Another way that acupuncture works is by acting on the system in the brain or the neuro-endocrine system to decrease the release of lutenIizing hormone and male hormones from the ovaries.

Acupuncture ultimately works on our hormones or endocrine system and on our ovaries to reduce male hormones production in the body and giving relief from

PCOS symptoms.

Patients with high BMI (Body Mass Index) benefit from acupuncture but it is a time-consuming process.
