An Overview of the Surrogacy Process

An Overview of the Surrogacy Process

There are many couples who are unable to conceive or carry a child naturally after 6 months to 1 year of unprotected sex. International Fertility Centre, one of the specialist centers in India provides a number of options for couples who are childless, including IVF and Surrogacy.

Surrogacy is defined as when another woman carries and gives birth to a baby for the couple who want to have a child.

There are two main types of surrogacy, gestational and traditional surrogacy. A gestational surrogate has no biological connection to the baby while a traditional surrogate is the baby’s biological mother. The resulting child in traditional surrogacy is genetically related to the surrogate mother since the child was conceived from the union of her egg and the father’s sperm.

How gestational surrogacy works

In gestational surrogacy, the pregnancy results from the transfer of an embryo created by in-vitro fertilization (IVF), in a manner so the resulting child is genetically unrelated to the surrogate. Gestational surrogate mothers are also referred to as gestational carriers. All gestational surrogates need to undergo blood tests, medical evaluation, uterine evaluation, genetic screening and psychological screening. Choosing a gestational surrogate is very similar to choosing an egg donor and IFC will provide you a group of profiles for potential surrogates for you to review and consider.

The process is involves the creation of an embryo from the egg of the intended mother or father’s sperm in the laboratory for 3-5 days. The fertilized egg, or embryo, is then transferred into the uterus of a surrogate who carries the baby to term. The child is thereby genetically related to the woman who donated the egg and the intended father or sperm donor, but not the surrogate.

The legal aspect of surrogacy
